What does the Bible say about Remarriage After Divorce?

The Bible says that it’s not a sin for a Christian to remarry after divorce. 1 Corinthians 7:27-28says, “Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. Are you unmarried? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned.”God understands that relationships can become hostile and potentially harmful to either person or the children, and has given mankind a lot of grace when it comes to divorce and remarriage. The above quoted passage may seem confusing, but it’s God’s order for what will be best for a couple, with exceptions when either party is not willing to follow God’s advice in scripture.

  1. If you are married, don’t seek divorce.Christians who are struggling in their marriage should seek help and do all they can to make restitution. Divorce should never be the first option. When and where the relationship presents a danger to the health and wellbeing of either party, this may not always be possible. God wants a marriage to be safe for all parties, but also understands that due to ungodly behaviors, divorce may not be avoided.
  2. If you are unmarried, don’t seek a wife or husband. There may be situations where restitution can be made after some time has passed. Divorces happen because people don’t follow godly principles concerning the commitment of marriage and restitution should be the first choice in following God’s will. Scripture also says that if a Christian man or woman wants to serve God to a greater capacity, doing so is easier as a single person (1 Cor. 7:32-33).
  3. If you do marry, it’s not a sin. When there is no possibility for restitution, a Christian may remarry. This is God’s grace on the matter. He’s given us great freedom to decide what will be the best for each situation. The reasons to remarry are the same for getting married the first time. They are for mutual love, benefit, and childbearing (Gen. 2:18-24), and to avoid sexual immorality because of a burning desire for sexual fulfilment (1 Cor. 7:1-9).
