I am He: Jesus knew who he was. Ambassadors for Christ, 2 Corinthians 4:20

Jesus knew who he was.
Do you know who you are?
The recent biblical insights concerning the One Body and “members in particular” have been very exciting and liberating for many Christians. Through a deeper understanding of Romans 12, the Christian Church is becoming more aware of the complete picture of the Body of Christ, and finding one’s personal function is answering a lot of questions for a lot of people. For years, countless individuals have struggled to understand how they fit in the Christian fellowship. As our understanding of the One Body grows, we’re gaining a fuller picture of what the Church is: a lifestyle, and not a church meeting; a full-functioning family and not a Sunday morning gathering led by a select few.

Building Upon a Biased Foundation: 1 Corinthians 3:10 plumb, expert builder

I know how to turn a handle on a grain mill. As a matter of fact, as big, heavy and fancy as our mill is, it didn’t even come with a manual, just a simple flyer with a blown-up picture of its component parts. Building a two-story barn…well, that is something I don’t know how to do. Even with well-laid architectural plans, I’m going to need some help. Better yet, I’m more suited to being the help, not running the show.

Harvest, Bible study on gardening our minds, Matthew 13:26, fruit, tares, soil

There have been many teachings on the fruit of the spirit; this is not one of them. However, my hope is that after deeply and honestly considering fruit—how one obtains it and why—each of us will reconsider our own personal gardens of life more honestly, seek out the production of fruit in our lives, and do so with much more diligence.

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane on the slopes of the Mount of Olives

“Gethsemane” is Hebrew and means “oil press,” a device used to extract the oil from olives. It was to this garden on the lower slopes of the Mount of Olives that Jesus came with his disciples on his last night of freedom before his intense suffering and crucifixion.

You Can't Escape God’s Word / Bible 1 Corinthians 3:18 Deuteronomy 30:19

As the grain mill handle goes around and around, it’s obvious the amount of work it takes to produce flour. Even if one buys flour, somewhere in that product’s past is an enormous amount of labor, from the planting and harvesting under the hot summer sun to the storing, hauling, and grinding of the grain. Some laws in life just cannot be escaped. As I worked, I was reminded of a young man I’d seen recently. Standing in the store, I overheard him make a statement that I have made myself in my youth. He looked a bit like the rebellious type: earring, spiked hair, low-hanging pants with a chain from pocket to some hidden area. I like this “type”—they are often the ones who question and think, though this day he made a statement that proved he didn’t have a solid foundation upon which to build his thoughts...

The full circuit of a human life is often referred to in the form of a circle: The Circle of Life. What is meant is the completion, from birth, to death. Often within that understanding is the concept that when you die, someone takes your place, perhaps in an effort to make us feel as if all is not lost, as if that Good Cause to which we dedicated our lives will be continued...

There are two things you are sure to get from grinding grain manually: flour and sweat. Even in winter. Grinding around and around makes you plain old tired. Many people today live very tight schedules with little time to sit and rest. Sleep problems are common; chronic fatigue is not rare. Enter the manufacturers of energy drinks! They sell get-up-and-go. But the older I get, I find that the work of living, with its ups and downs and rounds and rounds, also produces a different type of fatigue, one that can make moving forward more difficult with each passing year...

I was at my grain mill, grinding flour for our daily bread. Out the window the rain came down--again. In the Northeast we haven’t had the violent outbreaks of tornadoes that have plagued the Midwest, but we’ve had an overabundance of storms, and many of them have been powerful, loud, lightning-laden cloudbursts. As I turned the flywheel around and around I was reminded of one particular 4th of July. I was 9 years old, and we were at my aunt and uncle’s house for a barbeque. Out of clear, blue skies came a powerful storm, and with it, tornadoes. I remember the fear of crouching in the basement hoping for safety. As we drove home later that night...

As Jesus came to make known God, he came to also lead us into a relationship with Him, and certainly prayer is an indispensable component of that relationship. It is a prayer of recognition of who God is: a loving Father who forgives, supplies, and delivers. It is a prayer of praise that acknowledges the hope of a future life filled with God’s will. And it is a prayer that acknowledges our need now for community, forgiveness, help, deliverance, and of course, our daily bread.
