Some of my earliest memories are of prayers I offered as a very young boy. “Now I lay me down to sleep….” Following my mother’s lead phrase by phrase, as I was tucked into bed each night, we would then go through the list of family members one by one. “Bless Grandpa and Grandma Brown, bless Grandpa Patten,” and so on. From a very early age my mother laid a foundation of prayer in my life that today continues to serve me well.

Prayer does matter, Bible study showing why God needs our prayers

For many Christians, prayer is not as important as it should be. Many Christians only pray before meals, before bed (when they are children), or in emergency situations. The concept of “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17 - ESV) [1] is not a part of the lives of most Christians. How did the average Christian lifestyle drift so far from what the Bible says to do? The short answer is that most Christians are taught that everything that happens is God’s will, or “God is in control,” and that even Satan (if the Christian believes in Satan), has to ask God’s permission before he can act.

Some Christians teach that if you pray for something, and have faith, then you do not need to pray for that thing again. In fact, they say it shows a lack of faith to pray that prayer again, and you should just stand in faith until God answers your prayer. In contrast, there are other Christians who teach that if you want something from God, you should pray over and over for it until you get it. Which belief is correct?

As Jesus came to make known God, he came to also lead us into a relationship with Him, and certainly prayer is an indispensable component of that relationship. It is a prayer of recognition of who God is: a loving Father who forgives, supplies, and delivers. It is a prayer of praise that acknowledges the hope of a future life filled with God’s will. And it is a prayer that acknowledges our need now for community, forgiveness, help, deliverance, and of course, our daily bread.

[The following article is an edited transcription of our Nov/Dec 1999 bimonthly teaching, You are the Only You God Has.]
You are the only you that God has! You will never have to have the pressure that Jesus had, but guess what? You have the same strength that Jesus had to deal with whatever pressure that you do get because it is Christ in you, figuratively speaking, by way of holy spirit. You have the potential to be like Jesus, to speak like Jesus, to stand in the gap. Today, you are the one (the fellow worker), with Jesus...

Subtitle: Is God in Control?
The basic belief of most Christians is that God is outside of time, and therefore, once upon a time (biblically, “in the beginning”), before the world began, He saw the future as a present reality, including every single detail of human history, even the socks you are now wearing, or the fact that you would not be wearing any. If that is true, is there any other way...

One of the most difficult aspects of Bible study is understanding the text in the way that a person living at the time the Bible was written would understand it. We can use the model of a stage play to teach us how to better interpret the Bible. Let’s say we travel to England to see Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, played, not in American English with modern phrases and modern adaptations...

Maybe you don’t feel you deserve the help, or perhaps you think you can handle the problem on your own. Perhaps it’s the crowd saying the erroneous belief that: “It’s the sovereignty of God, and He has a reason for you being sick, out of work, lonely…” Or possibly you don’t think you can ask for help because you caused your problem. You’ve made mistakes in parenting or perhaps your health is failing because you’ve never eaten properly. I think there are...

There is a controversy among Christians who believe that Jesus is not God but the Son of God, about whether or not we can pray to Jesus. The only definitive place to go for an answer to that question is the Word of God. It is important when trying to answer such an important question that we do not base our position upon only one Greek word or one verse. Rather, we must examine the scope of Scripture to see what it says. We believe that the Bible makes it clear...

A study of the Word of God shows that prayer, the intensity of the spiritual battle and the help of other believers are also variables that affect what happens in our lives. The prayers of God’s people play an important part in the will of God coming to pass, because prayer is a catalyst for change — in people and in circumstances...

The Bible gives us very specific directions on when to pray and why. Ephesians 6:18a says to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” We can see that prayer should almost always precede action because we should always be in prayer on every matter. You can quickly see that if we were to follow this intense pattern of prayer in our own lives...
